Resume Formats Not All Are Equal Opportunity

A CV is a meaningful sales document that allows you to sell your qualifications as an applicant with the ultimate goal of a job interview. This condensed written record of your past has the power to make or break the success of your job search. But it could be the most daunting document you’ll ever fight to put together.

Faced with the tight labor market, choosing the right format is more important than ever. You may already be struggling with a kind of “population” factor, such as your age (too young or too old), you are an immigrant, a former military person or a homeless person. Or maybe your work history or education is not particularly impressive. Do not despair, every factor can be minimized. How? It all depends on choosing the right format for your circumstances – knowing what you need to emphasize and in which part of the curriculum vitae you need to highlight it.

Three types of CV formats – you choose

1. Chronological – the most used design. It focuses on your work history and your advancement in a single career path. It works well if you have a fairly stable career, want to highlight your career development and are currently looking for a similar job. But it may not work so well for you if there are gaps in your work process.

In the chronology, list the companies / positions last occupied and work backward. As the focus is on your work history, your education, awards, certifications, etc. will follow in the second half of the resume.

2. Functional – Used when your work record is insufficient, there are gaps in employment or if your previous experience is insignificant for the position you are looking for. Rather than focusing on your work history, this format focuses more on the skills you have acquired over time, personally and professionally, your qualifications, achievements, and your education. This design is also good if you are planning a career change. If you want to use the Functional format, make sure you write a good headline / goal.

3. Combination – combines the strengths of the above two. This format is useful when trying to impress a particular employer, as it not only shows the skills you have acquired and how this can benefit your new employer, but also your reliability and stability as an employee.

Remember – you only have one chance to make a first impression. Whether you’re a student with limited work experience or a senior executive with over 25 years of field experience, finding the right job resume can make the difference when looking for a job.
